Stem Cell Research
Both local newspapers are supporting Proposal 2, which lifts the ban on embryonic stem cell research in certain circumstances. First, the embryo in question must have been created specifically for fertility treatment. Next, the embryo is not suitable for implantation or cannot be used by the clinic, which means that it would just get thrown away. Last, the person donating the embryo did so for treatment. This is acceptable to me. The embryo would be discarded anyway and was donated for research in the first place.
Other limits imposed by the proposal include prohibiting the buying/selling of human embryos for stem cell research and stem cells cannot be taken from embryos more than 14 days after cell division begins.
No funding is provided. The proposed amendment lifts the ban on stem cell research under certain conditions.
I plan on voting yes.
